The Maori people are the indigenous population of New Zealand. It is not strictly known from where they came, but it is generally accepted that they originally came from eastern Asia.

The Maori tribes have a colorful history and many folk stories about their ancestors and the world. As such, drawing on this history to produce a unique tattoo would be a great idea. In the Maori culture, the art of the tattoo is sacred, and was used throughout adolescence and life to mark stages in development.

There are two general options open to you.

The first is to use the stories and history of the Maori people to produce a Maori tattoo design. This is more about your own personal interpretation of aspects of the Maori people and history that you find fascinating, rather than a strict copy of their own designs. For example, for many years, the Maori people were uninterrupted by outside factors. However, this changed with the arrival of European explorers and settlers a couple of hundred years ago. Perhaps you could combine elements of the old and sacred with elements of the new and unsettling. Think about what these concepts mean to you and jot your ideas down on a piece of paper.

The second is to research what markings the Maori people have, and either follow their example or reinterpret (and personlize) their markings to come up with your own Maori tattoo design.

The Maori tattoos are characterized by very rounded and flowing patterns. These patterns themselves are very involved and intricate. It is therefore vital for you to use a tattoo artist that you trust and who can show you pictures of other Maori tattoo designs they have produced.

You should also bear in mind that, in contrast to other lower back tattoo designs, a Maori tattoo design would typically be black. However, it is up to you to decide if you want to also incorporate some color.

Many people have used the patterns to frame the lower portion of their back because they accentuate the curves of the lower back, and add an almost tribal quality to otherwise plain skin.
